Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born October 20, 1964, she is the 49th Vice-President of the United States. She is also the first female vice-president and highest-ranking female official of U.S. History, as also the first African American and second Asian American vice president. Being a part of the Democratic Party, she was the attorney general for California between 2011 and 2017 and was a United States senator representing California from 2017 to 2021. Born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. After starting her career as an Alameda County District Attorney Harris was hired to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. Later she became the City Attorney of San Francisco. In 2003 she was elected as the district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010, Harris was elected Attorney General for California. Harris was elected again in 2014. Harris was the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 to 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election, becoming the second African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the United States Senate. As senator, she was a vocal advocate for healthcare reform, federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are not legal, the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, as well as progressive tax reform. She was praised nationally due to her sharp examination of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of assault on a woman.
